Missing teeth can be a problem, not just for eating and speaking, but for your self-esteem. When you are missing one or two front teeth, that problem is magnified and you undoubtedly feel self-conscious about your appearance. Dental implants, a bridge or dentures can restore your smile, but sometimes those options can be costly. If you need your front teeth replaced, you should talk with our dentist, Dr. Robert Doyle about a flipper.
A flipper is not really a denture. It is actually a retainer with prosthetic teeth mounted on the front. Normally, they are worn while your gums heal after surgery or an extraction; while your permanent dentures are being made, or you are getting ready for another replacement procedure. But, if cost is an issue for you, you might benefit from a flipper.
It is called a flipper because it is easy to flip out of place with your tongue. However, you should avoid doing this. A flipper is not as sturdy as a regular set of dentures, and it may slip from time to time when you bite down, or it could be damaged if you repeatedly put a great deal of pressure on it.
You need to clean your flipper since it will collect food debris during the day. You can scrub it very gently with dish soap, hand soap or a toothpaste formulated for dentures. Regular toothpaste has abrasives that can scratch the acrylic. You should use soak your flipper overnight in a denture solution to keep it moist and to sterilize it.
