Dental erosion is one of the leading causes of damage to our teeth. When the thin coating on your teeth, known as the tooth enamel, is worn away, this is known as dental erosion. Everyday normal wear and tear is enough to cause dental erosion, so it is important to make sure you’re doing everything you can to keep your mouth clean and free of debris that can promote any sort of damage to your enamel.

There are numerous causes of dental erosion that you need to be aware of. Acid reflux disease is a known disease that causes acid from your stomach to rise up your esophagus into your mouth, which can cause dental erosion. Furthermore, medications that you are taking may cause dental erosion due to dry mouth. Other causes of dental erosion include genetic predispositions, environmental factors, excessive soft drink or fruit drinks consumption, and unhealthy ingestion of sugary sweets and treats.

Fortunately, dental erosion can be treated. Always make sure to practice simple oral health care habits such as brushing twice daily and flossing once a day as well. Due to extreme sensitivity often present in your teeth after meals, exercise caution with any cleaning tools you may be using, and only use brushes with soft bristles. Because saliva is so integral to the health of your mouth, always look for products that can increase saliva production. This includes chewing sugarless gum after meals or using mouthwash. Focus on a healthy diet and avoid sugars, especially sour sweets that can greatly increase the acidity in your mouth.
